Samaritan House provides a safe haven for homeless men to re-evaluate their lives. It actively works with other agencies to provide support and opportunities for housing. Their stay at Samaritan House aims to empower them with dignity, self-respect and confidence. Crisis accommodation is available for men only, over the age of 18 years.
There is never a good time to be homeless but Winter is the worst time of all. In Geelong on any one night there are at least 40 homeless people – mainly men- living on the streets. Samaritan House Geelong is the only facility in Geelong to cater exclusively for homeless men.
But Samaritan House isn’t just a bed for the night. It is a hot meal and a place at the table; it is a place to have a shower and wash clothes; it is a listening and caring ear. But most importantly for homeless men it is a place of sanctuary where they can rest and recover.
In the four years since we welcomed out first guest, Samaritan House and our many volunteers have been able to offer hope and shelter to 264 men who would otherwise have been sleeping rough. But that is only part of the Samaritan House story. In addition to having a place to sleep our guests are supported to access the help they need to find permanent accommodation and 43percent of the men who have stayed with us now have homes of their own.
